I‘ve always had a penchant for history, but most notably war history.
I knew that my Grandfather had been involved WWI, but there just was not that much information on the subject. While his service during WWI was certainly of interest, the Second World War provided the most fascination for me, probably as a result of being a Baby Boomer born to a generation with the war still fresh in recent memory. But perhaps also from all the WWII movies that abounded, and that I loved to watch as a kid.
So, with very little information to go on and a lot of digging and research, I’ve constructed what I believe to be a fairly accurate timeline and narrative of my Grandfather’s WWI service. It truly became a journey of discovery.
I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel Europe fairly extensively over the years, and have visited many of the places I’ve read about, or that have were depicted in those aforementioned WWII movies.
But when my travels take me to France, Belgium, or Germany, I always wonder if I am in a place where my Grandfather stood, or if I am experiencing the things he saw. And now as a result of my research, when I travel to those places I can say for certain that, yes, I am standing in the spots where my Grandfather stood, and am seeing the things he saw as a young man, all those years ago.
This site is a result of that journey of discovery.
